IASP is pleased to announce that Khaliun Gan-Erdene, MD, an anesthesiologist from Mongolia, has been awarded the 2025 Siriraj International Fellowship in Clinical Pain Management. This prestigious fellowship, hosted at Mahidol University’s Siriraj Hospital in Thailand, provides advanced clinical training in pain management to emerging leaders in the field.
Dr. Gan-Erdene’s dedication to improving pain care in Mongolia stems from firsthand experience with the limitations of pain management in her country. Working at the First Central Hospital of Mongolia, she has encountered numerous patients suffering from chronic and psychosomatic pain, yet the country has few trained specialists and limited resources to provide comprehensive care. Her experiences in anesthesiology and emergency medicine have highlighted a significant gap in the treatment of chronic pain, driving her commitment to developing specialized expertise in this area.
Chronic pain is a growing concern in Mongolia. A 2016 study of 11,480 adults in Mongolia found that 12.3% experience chronic pain, yet the country’s healthcare infrastructure lacks the capacity to effectively diagnose and treat even a fraction of these cases. Dr. Gan-Erdene aims to address this gap by establishing a fully functional pain clinic, providing specialized care and serving as a model for expanding pain services nationwide.
Through this fellowship, Dr. Gan-Erdene will gain hands-on experience in multidisciplinary pain management, including advanced interventional techniques and rehabilitation strategies. Upon her return to Mongolia, she hopes to train colleagues, increase public awareness of chronic pain, and enhance the national approach to pain care.
IASP congratulates Dr. Gan-Erdene on this well-deserved recognition and looks forward to her contributions to pain management in Mongolia and beyond.
