In August 2024, Andrew Rice initiated a Presidential Task Force to update IASP’s guidance for the use of laboratory animals in pain research. The task force will be responsible for revising the IASP Zimmerman guideline from 1983 and potentially expanding the guidance to cover aspects such as internal and external validity, publication guidance, evidence appraisal, and reproducibility

Mission Statement

The aim of the animal ethics task force is to provide guidance on the conduct of animal pain research to minimize harm to animals and maximize scientific and societal benefit.

Working Groups

The Task Force formed 6 working groups who will discuss topics within this scope, perform scoping reviews if required, and formulate recommendations which will be discussed and included in a Delphi process.

  1. Ethics – General Issues
  2. Internal Validity of Animal Pain Research
  3. Reporting
  4. Animal Models of Pain
  5. Animal Testing for Pain
  6. Pain Reduction in Animal Studies
