I pioneered the development of clinical services, health workforce education, and pain research in Malaysia, setting up the first Acute Pain Service, multidisciplinary pain clinic and CBT Pain Management Programs in the Ministry of Health. I was instrumental in linking hospital palliative care and pain management services and spearheaded nationwide initiatives of “Pain as the 5th Vital Sign” and “Pain Free Hospitals,” promoting a multidisciplinary approach and the use of traditional and complementary medicine for pain management. My research includes pain epidemiology, the application of CBT in an Asian population, and the impact of culture and ethnicity on pain.
